Delcam added its 25,000th customer when special machine developer JR Automation technologies purchased six seats of the developer's FeatureCAM feature-based machining software. Founded in 1980, JR designs and build lean manufacturing systems for metal welding, assembly, testing, fabric wrapping and material handling, including robotic welding and assembly solutions. More than 160 employees occupy a 120,000-square-foot facility in Holland, Michigan. The decision to replace the company's previous manufacturing software with FeatureCAM was prompted by the arrival of fabrication manager Jason Metzger, who had purchased the software three years ago while working for a small automation firm. Upon his arrival at JR, Mr. Metzger discovered bottlenecks in converting machine designs into manufactured parts. NC programs took too long to create, and machine tool productivity suffered from inefficient toolpaths. Mr. Metzger arranged a demonstration of FeatureCAM for the company's purchasing manager and programming team. Impressed with the software's ease of use, JR purchased a seat for each machine control in its manufacturing cell to enable machine monitoring while the operator programs the next part. According to Mr. Metzger, the software has reduced programming time on machinery plate components from an hour to 20 minutes or less.
