Developed by Mitsubishi, the MD+Cell combines the Melfa RV-12S six-axis robot with the MD+Pro wire EDM machine. Because automatic operation of the cell is based entirely on programmable software functions rather than hardware settings, adding the robot provides greater flexibility in changing jobs, an important asset in the time- and cost-conscious medical industry, the company says. In addition, the integration of the EDM machine with the robot is said to provide longer unattended running time.Ìý

The cell comes standard with automatic threading of wires between 0.006" and 0.12" and all-axis absolute control. The company says this enables accurate positioning without returning to zero after power failure. A full servo B axis is optional, and the integration of the B axis provides indexing and turn-and-burn capabilities. With a 12-kg payload, the robot features a 64-position magazine. It automatically changes workpieces during machining.
