Used in medical applications such as machining hip and knee components, Lyndex-Nikken’s VC toolholder operates at speeds as fast as 40,000 rpm and is said to offer high accuracy (runout is within 0.00012" at 4×D) and smooth surface finishes.
The toolholder’s slim and smooth profile eliminates noise related to high speed rotation, and it reduces the air current created by the hex nuts and slots on the periphery of most toolholders, the company says. A groove under the nut dampens the micro-harmonic vibrations. Furthermore, a thicker wall at the base of the system and its short gage length allow for greater rigidity and static stiffness. An adjustment screw option provides axial adjustment, and high-pressure through coolant is also available. The toolholder’s design features a TiN bearing nut that reduces the friction associated with nut tightening to provide greater torque.
The 8-degree collet design of the toolholder further contributes to rigidity and gripping torque, the company says. The extended straight portion of the collet pilots and maintains the concentric placement of the tool, while the flat shoulder design increases perpendicular force transfer.
Fixtures and couplings are not required to install or remove collets from nuts. A GH handle wrench provides two-way lock and unlock for quick tooling installation.
