The company's VMX50/50T vertical machining center (VMC) has a Cat 50 taper spindle, which complements the VMX50. The new model has a 30-hp spindle motor and an 8,000 rpm spindle with 300 psi coolant through the spindle as a standard. The VMC has X, Y, Z travels of 50" (127 mm) x 26" (660 mm) x 24" (610 mm), a 59" (1500 mm) x 26" (660 mm) table with a capacity of 3,000 lbs and a 20,000-lb frame. The spindle motor produces 263 foot-pounds of torque at 600 rpm for heavy face milling while the max spindle speed permits aggressive feeds and speeds, according to the company.
The VMC uses servomotors that generate 1,181 ipm (30 m/min) rapids in X and Y axes and 787 ipm (20 m/min) for Z. The 163-gallon capacity coolant tank supports the coolant through the spindle system but also the integral coolant ring at the bottom of the spindle. The company says the linear rails on all three axes provide excellent contouring and surface finishes. The chip management system includes a chip conveyor as standard.
The VMC is equipped with the UltiMax conversational control. The dual screen control is said to provide the operator total control of the machining process. Programs can be created and optimized on the shop floor, improving quality and decreasing lead times, according to the company.
