GBI Cincinnati’s SMS SMV-40 series of VMCs is suited for a variety of applications, including precise die/mold work; mixed-volume, short-run operations; and dedicated high-volume applications.
With X-, Y- and Z-axis travels of 1,000, 520 and 505 mm, respectively, the machine combines high-performance milling and large machining capacity within a compact footprint of 2,800 × 2,185 × 3,000 mm. The 1,150- × 520-mm worktable can withstand a 500-kg load, and five table T-slots are standard.
Other features include rapid traverse rates of 60 m/minute in the X and Z axes and 30 m/minute in the Y axis. The maximum acceleration of the three axes ranges to 1G. Also, the ballscrews in all three axes are pre-tensioned to increase accuracy.
The servodriven, double-arm ATC can change tools in 1 second, with the magazine accommodating 24 tools at a maximum weight of 8 kg, length of 300 mm and diameter of 80 mm (150 mm with no adjacent tool).
The machining center includes versatile, high speed linear guideways in the X and Y axes and box ways in the Z axis. Positioning accuracy is 8µm, repeatability is 4 µm and circularity is 2.7 µm. A high-torque, 18.5-kW Fanuc spindle motor with direct dive permits full horsepower at low spindle speeds. The 40-taper spindle delivers 50 to 12,000 rpm with semi-ceramic bearings to minimize heat. The headstock is designed for rigidity and precision cutting, even during full-power machining in steel, the company says.
