Available from United Grinding, the Studer universal internal diameter (ID) cylindrical grinding machine enables internal grinding of longer workpieces such as those used in the machine tool, drive element, aerospace and toolmaking industries. Three different sizes are available for machining workpieces with maximum lengths of 11.81", 27.56" or 51.18" (300, 700 or 1,300 mm) and inside diameters ranging to 9.84" (250 mm). These grinding capacities make the machine suitable for processing chuck components, spindle shafts, spindle housings, rotor shafts and similar parts, the company says.

The machine’s grinding spindle turret accommodates as many as four grinding spindles (including a maximum of two external grinding spindles), a universal measuring probe and internal grinding quills in lengths ranging to 10.433" (265 mm). According to United Grinding, the machine enables both internal and external machining of workpieces in the same clamping, minimizes non-cut times and boosts part accuracy. With a direct-drive integrated swivel axis and high-resolution measuring system, the turret rotates/positions quickly and precisely for a repeatability of less than 1 arcsecond.

In addition to a workhead that can be direct- or belt-driven, the machine’s workpiece table automatically swivels from -10 to +20 degrees via the machine control for axis-parallel grinding of tapers. As many as two pivoting dressing units for fixed or rotating dressing tools can be mounted on the machine to keep the grinding wheels sharp and ensure process stability. A Granitan S103 mineral casting bed damps vibration and provides thermal stability for surface quality and workpiece accuracy. The grinder provides a FANUC 31i-B series control with integrated PC and a 15" touchscreen, and can be equipped with either the Studer WIN or StuderSIM operating systems.
