Northfield Precision Instrument Corp.’s line of custom internal-grip collet chucks features a 0.0001" total indicator reading (TIR) or less, uniform holding pressure, the ability to change collets without indicating, and pull-back action on clamping. The internal grip chucks are available in coolant or air blast through models.
The chucks have diameters as small as 6 mm, with the ability to grip parts ranging to 115 mm. The chucks are air-actuated with an internal self-contained actuator, using the same air tubes as Northfield’s air chucks and diaphragm chucks.
As the chucks are actuated, the collet is drawn over a cone to give it maximum rigidity and pull-back action, ensuring the part is seated against the hard stop. As an option, coolant or air blast through the center can pump coolant from the spindle side of the workpiece. Other options are to use air-detect part-seat sensing or chip blow-off, the company says.
