Walter now offers its indexable insert drills in PVD drilling WNN15 grade. This low-adhesion grade specializes in drilling ISO N materials such as wrought or cast aluminum alloys, which commonly see use in aerospace, automotive and general machining to reduce weight.
The grade’s smooth surface and reduced tendency toward both adhesion and build-up on the cutting edge increase process reliability, wear resistance and tool life, even at high cutting speeds. WNN15 also forms a hard substrate on indexable inserts, promoting cutting edge stability. Walter says this combination of effects improves the cost-effectiveness of indexable insert drilling.

Depending on the application, Walter says that drill inserts using WNN15 can see up to a 200% tool life increase compared to conventional drilling grades. The company’s indexable insert drills also offer multiple indexing, simplifying reuse and enabling it with lower costs and less time required.
WNN15 drilling grades are currently available for the following indexable insert drills in Walter’s catalog: D4120 (sizes 1-8), D3120 (sizes 1-7) and B3212.DF--B3214.DF (0.394-0.709” (10-18 mm)).
