Available from C&C Manufacturing, the ShortStop device shortens the time between machining cycles by alerting operators when a cycle has been completed. The device is installed in a toolholder and placed in the spindle by the toolchanger at the end of a machining program. The machine moves the transmitter to trigger the actuator button on its side, which sends a signal to a receiver positioned near the operator, who may be tending other machines or performing other tasks.
The independent system can be moved from one machine to another, and the portable receiver can be placed wherever the operator can see or hear it while away from the machine. The transmitter’s circuit boards are coated to prevent damage from vibration during the tool change, and the housing is sealed with an O-ring. All threads are heli-coiled for added strength. When not in use, the transmitter is held in the toolchanger magazine away from the harsh machining environment.
