Rollomatic’s ShapeSmart NP50 pinch/peel grinding machine is said to offer higher accuracy and speed than its predecessor. The pinch/peel process performs non-round grinding of such components as punches, die and mold components, and pins, both round and non-round. The machine is designed specifically for cylindrical grinding of carbide, ceramics, High Speed Steel and stainless steel workpieces.
Using pinch grinding, the machine performs rough and finish grinding in one pass, which reduces cycle times. The NP50 uses two different grinding wheels running on separate spindles and positioned using independently controlled CNC linear slides. A positioning camera and parts flipper are used for grinding coolant slots and through-holes in blanks. The roughing and finishing direct-drive spindles both provide 20 hp.
As an option, the machine can grind extra-long parts, providing a total grinding length of 16" for blanks as long as 19". The machine is equipped with a Marposs in-process gaging system and a Renishaw pre-probing system.
