Software Facilitates Design Manufacturability Analysis
DFM Pro is the latest in the series of DFM Product Life-cycle Management (PLM) products from Geometric Limited. Available for SolidWorks 2007 and 2008, the software is a “Design for Manufacturing” product developed to enable designers tofacilitate upstream manufacturability validation and identification of design areas that are difficult or expensive to manufacture. It includes design rules for processes such as milling, drilling, turning and sheet metal fabrication as well as for processing manufacturing tolerances specified with SolidWorks Intelligent Feature Technology (SWIFT).

As an integrated add-in to SolidWorks, the software allows designers to perform design checks and analysis for manufacturability within SolidWorks sessions. It is designed to allow early prediction and prevention of production problems or manufacturing inefficiencies, automatethe manufacturability review process and decrease lead time by reducing backtracking and design iterations. In addition, the company says, the software provides a scalable framework for manufacturability knowledge capture and reuse.
Users can customize the software by licensing the company’s DFM Enterprise. Customization can include programming new rules orconnecting with a database or Product Data Management (PDM) systems to obtain required parameter information for existing or new rules. Other options include creating a custom user interface and configuration parameters for the rules.
