Seco Tools says its CBN60K grade is designed for finishing operations in case-hardened steels (58 to 63 HRc) in which precision and reliability are more important than high speed. Available in brazed-tip or solid inserts with a range of geometries, the grade is said to reduce inventory and increase tool life.
 
The turning grade is designed to perform at speeds ranging from 425 to 825 sfm, feeds ranging from 0.004" to 0.016" ipr and a typical finishing depth of cut of 0.006". It can be used with or without coolant in continuous or light interrupted cuts.
 
The grade’s substrate consists of uniquely distributed, micron-sized particles to increase performance, tool life, consistency and component surface finish. Additionally, the multi-layer K coating, in conjunction with pre-coating treatments and PVD techniques, also enhances performance, the company says.
 
The turning grade also incorporates a superalloy binder consisting of both the superalloy and TiCN, a formulation that is said to improve the mechanical properties without compromising wear resistance. The enhanced toughness increases cutting edge reliability and tool life as well as the ability to machine at higher cutting speeds. According to the company, an optimized cutting edge promotes reliable machining.
